Arthur O. Haukland
Pvt. Arthur O. Haukland was born December 31st, 1889 in North St. Paul MN. He enlisted February 3rd, 1918.
Served with the 79th Company, 6th US Marine Regiment in France from May to October 1918.
He received the Purple Heart with a gold star, World War I Victory Medal with three clasps,
French Fourragere. Killed in action in France, October 4th, 1918.
VFW Post 1350 was chartered by 31 local veterans on October 10, 1934 in the North St. Paul library.
The Post was named in honor of Arthur O. Haukland, the first man from North St. Paul
to be killed in action during World War I.

Post 1350 has an excellent, hardworking, Auxiliary
which was chartered in February of 1935. The Auxiliary's main purpose is to serve the veteran and his or her family whenever and wherever possible and to assist the Post with its special events and numerous functions. New members are always welcome! Auxiliary Members must be citizens of the United States or a United States National, and at least 16 years old. Those eligible are: Husband/Wife * Widower/Widow * Father/Mother Grandfathers/Grandmothers * Sons/Daughters Grandsons/Granddaughters * Brothers/Sisters Of persons who were or are eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. Why are Veteran Service Organizations like the VFW and American Legion memberships dropping? VFW is down to 1.5 million, about half of what it was 30 years ago. The American Legion is seeing the same steady decline.
It’s Not because people stopped supporting veterans. Here’s what’s really going on:
Our WWII, Korea, and Vietnam members are passing. Those generations built our posts. We’re losing hundreds of them every day. In North St Paul, Legion Post 39 and VFW Post 1350 had over 548 man hours from April to June 2026 rending Military Honors, and the request keep coming.
Younger vets live differently. Post-9/11 vets connect online and balance kids, jobs, and drill weekends. Look around to see how you can draw them in. Maybe changing your noon general membership meeting to the evening, holding membership meetings on Zoom, ect...
So why should veterans join a Veterans Service Organization today? Because our WWII, Korea, and Vietnam fought for your benefits by showing up in force for our own Veterans Day on the Hill, they provided trained service officers to help with VA claims for free. The Legion, VFW, and DAV secure billions for vets every year. Our Minnesota St. Paul VA Regional Benefits office has processed over $120 billion in total payouts distributed nationally. And that number is growing.
It’s for your family too. Kid-friendly events, scholarships, youth programs, plus the Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion give the whole family a place.
We protect what you served for. Flags around town, school programs, honor guards for funerals.
We keep patriotism alive right here at home.
The posts that stay active are holding steady, and some are even growing. When we’re out putting up flags, helping with claims, and hosting events, you’d expect younger vets to show up. But - Many still don’t. But groups like the Sons of The American Legion and the Riders are bringing in new folks every day. If you hear "this is the way we've always done it" ask them for an opportunity to try something new.
If you’re a vet and haven’t been to your Post lately, stop in. Ask what we’re working on. You might be surprised and want to volunteer. If you’re not a vet, thank a member and ask how you can help. It’s going to take the whole community to get our local organizations through these trying times.
